For those who might not know, McCarroll played drums on Oasis's ground-breaking debut album Definitely Maybe. Released in 1994, the album catapulted the band to stardom and became one of the most celebrated albums in British rock history. Tracks like “Supersonic” and “Live Forever” are now anthems for generations of fans.
Tony was also the drummer on the chart-topping hit "Some Might Say," which became the band’s first number-one single in the UK. The song is featured on the legendary album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, one of the best-selling albums of all time.
Tony also featured on one of the most iconic album covers of all time: the Definitely Maybe album cover. The famous picture was taken by photographer Michael Spencer Jones at Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs house in West Didsbury, Manchester, it features each band member, including McCarroll, captured in a moment that feels like the calm before the storm. The image has become symbolic of the 1990s Britpop era, representing the start of something massive.
Noel Gallagher and McCarroll got on during childhood, but as Oasis gradually became more famous, the relationship between the two faltered. Noel has repeatedly publicly slammed McCarroll's drumming ability, saying it was not good enough for a number one single. After McCarroll's ejection from the band, Noel Gallagher stated in an interview with the Associated Press, "I like Tony as a geezer, but he wouldn't have been able to drum the new songs."
On the last day of April 1995, McCarroll's departure was announced and he was replaced by Alan White, who remained until 2004.
